Westford School Committee to Review Zero Tolerance Drug Policy Print E-mail
Monday, 31 May 2010 21:08

The Westford School Committee and the Superintendent of Schools will conduct a public review of Westford Academy's zero-tolerance drug use policy on Tuesday evening June 1, at 7.30PM at the Millennium School on Depot Road.  The review is being conducted in response to pressure from students and parents to rescind a ruling by Westford Academy Headmaster, Jim Antonelli.  The ruling bans two seniors from participating in graduation ceremonies, because they were caught in a drug sweep at the Academy by Westford Police.

The two students are both seniors.  Marijuana was found in their lockers during a sweep by Police Officers utilizing drug detecting K-9s.  Such sweeps are regularly conducted in support of the Academy's zero tolerance drug policy.  The seniors identified in the sweep have been banned from participating in several graduation events.  They have been banned from their senior prom, their class trip and from graduation exercises.  However, the students will receive their diplomas.  At the meeting, school officials will be considering a request to allow the students to participate in their graduation.
